Alpha devlog #9 - Building, destroying and exploding things

Hi there!

In this Devlog I am showing some improvements on my indie game "Too Far Too Late" where you will be able to build a base on the moon and survive with your colony.

The main changes for this devlog are:

  • More realistic building mechanic
  • Building actions that can be done by the player's character
  • Destruction and explosion of buildings

I have improved some mechanics already presented in previous Devlogs that you can watch on my playlist on Youtube.

More realistic building mechanic: Now, when the player places an object, only a placeholder will appear until a colonist (or the player himself) go to the object to finish building it. Once the inventory system will be implemented, the colonists will have to craft the necessary parts and bring them to the position of the object to be built.

Building actions that can be done by the player's character: All the actions that the colonists can do could also be done by the player's character. The player controls one of the colonists and can move to an object to build it, do repairs, disassemble an object, etc.

Destruction and explosion of buildings: In one of the previous devlogs, the concept of reliability has been introduced. Every working device loses reliability over time, and stop working when its reliability is too low. Some devices used to generate/transform energy, or used in air/fuel processes (like air pumps) can generate an explosion.
The explosion of a device can destroy the buildings around it. Walls, floor, roof, or even airlocks can be destroyed by the explosion, and a room can lose its atmosphere (and oxygen), which can be a very bad event for the colony.

The game is inspired by other colony games like Rimworld, Timberborn, Stardeus, and will include some mechanics from Satisfactory, like a deep miner, and other kinds of industry to craft items for the colony.
